Luciano, An Immigrant's Journey of Rediscovery
Luciano Sabatini came to the United States when he was four years old. His parents had briefly lived in Argentina before making the move to Queens, and with them, they brought the many cultural aspects of their lives in Italy. As Sabatini grew up, he was teased for his strange name and for the way he struggled to learn his new language. He longed to shed his Italian roots and assimilate into American culture.Sabatini changed his name in order to better fit in and became ashamed of his heritage and his family. This caused him to build up severe feelings of inadequacy and inferiority, which plagued him all through his childhood. As a young man, his ego crumbled, and he had to rebuild his self-confidence through the slow process of psychotherapy. Over the course of his life, he learned to become a more self-assured individual, and finally, he was able to embrace his identity by relearning Italian, reconnecting with family members, and reviving his old customs.
In Luciano: An Immigrant’s Journey of Rediscovery, readers can follow Sabatini through his entire life as he finally comes to understand and embrace the importance of his heritage. |
Reviews for Luciano, An Immigrant's Journey of Rediscovery
A heartfelt love letter to family and country by another hardworking, talented immigrant. Amazon Reviewer - It does not take long for one to immediately identify with the sentiments of loss, pride, and personal courage expressed in the first few pages of this honest account of the author's journey of immigration and successful integration in The United States. Even before you get to the pictures of his parents you can already envision these hardy, courageous people who first had to scrimp and save everything they had in order to be able to carve a more prosperous future for their family after the devastation of their country during World War II. Mr. Sabatini pours every bit of his own hardworking DNA into his poignant narrative of first trying to fit in in Argentina, his parents first stop in their journey, only to be dropped in the middle of a Queens neighborhood where he struggled to fit in. His subsequent retelling of his process of adaptation as a young professional is both impressive and heart warming because of his ingrained work ethic and his perseverance in the face of adversity. His retelling is admirable and entertaining to the point that the reader quickly jumps to his side and roots for him as he slowly learns to look inside for clues as to how to cope with everything around him. I enthusiastically recommend LUCIANO.
A wonderful Journey. Amazon Reviewer - Luciano’s journey from Italian immigrant to American citizen is an interesting story. Being of Italian heritage, I found myself reminiscing my youth with my large Italian family. His journey goes from youth to young adult rejecting his name and heritage. His first marriage ended sadly when his wife died of cancer. His struggles with his career were vindicated when he retired successfully. Luciano comes full circle in the end loving his heritage and finally accepting his name. The pictures in the book are an added attraction. I laughed and cried throughout the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend reading it.
Inspirational, and a fascinating real-lilfe story. Amazon Reviewer - First, let me say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I've never cared for biographies. Maybe this was different because I know Lou. But it was also such a well-written book in the sense that I could almost feel the human side of his experiences. I hope that Lou can look back on his life and realize how successful he's been, with nothing being handed to him. He's touched many lives, and helped so many. This book should be the source of inspiration for others who make the bold move to a new country. Congratulations to Lou on a book well-written, but more importantly, on a life well-lived.
Incredible memoir of an immigrant’s experience. Amazon Reviewer - This was a very intriguing story of an immigrant’s experience. My family’s also from Europe and immigrated to Queens, New York so I was curious to read this memoir. It’s a very relatable story for families who left Europe after World War II. Reading this really makes you feel as though you know the innermost thoughts and dreams of Luciano. You get to learn about his family, career, and struggles as he adjusted to life here in the US. I experienced many emotions while reading this and felt like I was a part of his family by the end. It was a truly enjoyable read.
I have a better understanding of the challenges immigrants face. Amazon Reviewer - This book shares an honest encounter of what an immigrant goes through in this country. After reading this memoir, I have a better understanding of the challenges immigrants face. I highly recommend this book and commend Luciano for sharing his incredible journey!
